Demystifying E-Bikes: Top 10 Questions About Electric Bikes

Your Questions Answered

From sweat-free commutes to more luggage-carrying capabilities and eco-friendly operation, it's no wonder that more and more people are making the switch to E-Bikes. If you're considering joining the E-Bike revolution but have some questions, we've got you covered. Here are our top 10 E-Bike related questions, demystified.

Why should I pick an E-Bike?

There are several reasons why you should opt for an E-Bike. Firstly, they're fun to ride! With a little bit of assistance from the motor, you can zip around town with ease and make commuting an absolute breeze – no more arriving at work in a sweaty mess! They're also great for carrying more luggage, whether it's your weekly shop or your work bag, lugging it up the hills suddenly doesn’t feel quite as daunting. Unsurprisingly, E-Bikes are excellent for building your fitness, and are great for the environment – get a workout while reducing your carbon footprint.

What type of E-Bike is best for me?

The type of E-Bike that's best for you depends on your needs. If you're primarily using it for commuting, a city E-Bike is a good option. If you're planning on hitting the trails, an E-MTB is your best bet. For those who want a bit of both, a hybrid E-Bike might be the way to go. If you need to carry heavy loads, an E-Cargo Bike is the answer – there’s something for everyone!

What is the range of an E-Bike's battery?

Most E-Bike batteries have a range somewhere in the region of 66 miles, but some can go up to 100 miles and beyond. The range will depend on several factors, including the terrain, rider weight, and level of assistance.

How long does it take to charge, and is it easy?

Charging your E-Bike is as simple as plugging it into a socket. It's no harder than charging your mobile phone. Most E-Bike batteries take 3-5 hours to fully charge, but some can take longer.

How powerful is an E-Bike and what is the maximum speed?

In the UK, E-Bikes are limited to an assistance speed of 25km/h (15.5mph), which is more than enough to tackle hills and inclines with ease, even when fully-loaded. Most E-Bikes will feature different levels of assistance, so you can alter how much assistance the motor provides based on the terrain or distance.

Note: While you may come across various derestricting services, we’d highly recommend avoiding these. Not only is it illegal, but it’s also potentially dangerous, and will most certainly void your warranty!

How heavy is an E-Bike?

E-Bikes typically between 18-25kg, roughly 40-50% heavier than a non-electric bike, depending on the model. While they're heavier, they're still manageable and easy to ride, and the benefit of the motor far outweighs those extra few kilos.

Are they easy to store and transport?

E-Bikes are pretty much like normal bikes when it comes to storage and transportation. However, there are a few things to remember to keep the battery in good condition: store the bike at room temperature, remove the battery during transport, and don't leave it at full (or empty) charge for extended periods.

Where can I ride an E-Bike?

You can ride an E-Bike pretty much anywhere you can ride a normal push bike. You don't need a driving license, tax, or insurance.

Note: while you may not need insurance to ride out on the road, we’d highly recommend insuring your E-Bike! We offer a FREE bike tracker & 1 year’s FREE insurance with the purchase of any E-Bike courtesy of BikeFinder (subject to Ts&Cs).

What kind of maintenance is required?

In general, it's important to keep the bike clean, lubricate the chain, and check the brakes regularly.
